The second version of USB 4 arrived with a speed of 80 GB/s

The second version of USB 4 brings the speed of 80 Gbps to users. In fact, the bandwidth of the second version of USB4 has been doubled compared to the previous generation.

A new standard for USB-C cable was introduced. This standard, which is called the second version of USB 4, can provide the user with a maximum speed of 80 Gb/s using special cables. The USB4 Version 2.0 standard will continue to use USB Type-C connectors.

Double speed increase in the second version of the USB 4 standard

The USB Promoter group announced this news mostly for developers to adapt to the upcoming change. Brad Saunders, head of the USB Promoter Group, said:
This speed boost will be most useful for powerful displays, storage drives, and USB-based docks and hubs.
Because the USB 4 version 2 standard is highly compatible, users can use new cables and devices with any USB-C connector that supports USB4 Version 1.0, USB 3.2, USB 2.0 and Thunderbolt 3 standards. Old cables will also work at their previous speed if connected to a port that supports the USB4 2.0 standard.

Here are some features of the second version of USB 4:

Maximum speed of 80 Gbps for data transfer based on the new layer architecture
Using current Type-C cables for transmission at 40 Gbps and new cables for 80 Gbps
Updated data and display protocols to make better use of the added bandwidth
USB data architecture update to increase data tunneling speed in USB 3.2 to more than 20 Gbps
Updated for better performance with the latest versions of DisplayPort and PCIe

We will have to wait until the USB Developer Days 2022 conference to get more information about the specifications of the second version of USB4. The conference will be held on November 11  in Washington, and during it, explanations will be provided regarding the naming and marketing of the 80 Gbps standard. However, most of the companies have not been able to follow the previous recommendations of this group.
